From Proto-Indo-Iranian *paHmā́ (scabies, rash), from Proto-Indo-European *peh₁-mḗn, from *peh₁- (to hurt). Cognate with Avestan 𐬞𐬁𐬨𐬀 (pāma), 𐬞𐬄𐬨𐬀 (pąma, scabies), Pashto پم (pam, scabies). Also related to Latin pēminōsus (full of cracks), Ancient Greek πῆμα (pêma, misery).
