From Proto-Indo-Iranian *raȷ́ʰ-, with further origin uncertain. Mayrhofer tentatively derived the root from Proto-Indo-European *legʰ- (“to lay”) originally, but later doubts this derivation. Cognate with Persian راز (râz).
