Borrowed from Classical Persian ریشم (rēšam), a variant of ابریشم (abrēšam, abrēšum, “silk”), from Middle Persian ʾp̄lyš(w)m (abrēšom, “silk”). Compare Bengali রেশম (reśom), Gujarati રેશમ (reśam).
