Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-dŕ̥ḱ, from the zero grades of *sem- (one, same) and *derḱ- (to see) respectively. By surface analysis, स- (sa-) + दृश् (dṛś). Compare also सदृक्ष (sadṛ́kṣa).

      Lovely of form art thou, alike on every side; though far, thou shinest brightly as if close at hand.
