A variant of the rarer form চৌধরি (cōudhori), from Sanskrit चतुर्धरी (caturdharī, “holder of four”), a compound of चतुर् (catur, “four”) +‎ धर (dhara, “holding”, from धृ (dhṛ, “to hold”)) +‎ -ई (-ī, “doer”), with "four" here representing the total of something (compare চারদিক (cardik, literally "four directions", but used to mean "every direction")).
