Borrowed from Classical Persian زهر (zahr), from Middle Persian zʾhl (zahr), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *ǰaθráH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ǰʰatráH, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰn̥-tr-éh₂, from *gʷʰen- (“to strike, kill”). Cognate with Hindustani زہر / ज़हर (zahar). Doublet of ঘাত (ghat), হত (hot), হত্যা (hotta), and হানা (hana).
