জোনাকি

Bengali

Etymology

Compound of জোনাক (jōnak) + -ই (-i, adjectival suffix), originally denoting something related to moonlight, from Prakrit *𑀚𑁄𑀦𑁆𑀳𑀸𑀓𑁆𑀓 (*jŏnhākka), from 𑀚𑁄𑀦𑁆𑀳𑀸 (jŏnhā) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-), from Sanskrit ज्योत्स्ना (jyotsnā, moonlight; splendour), a very early Prakritized form of द्योत्स्ना (dyotsnā), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *dyawtsnaH, from Proto-Indo-European *dyewtsneh₂, from *dyew- (to be bright) + *-t (extension) + *-sneh₂ (nominal suffix). Doublet of জুনি (juni) and জ্যোৎস্না (jōtsna).
