Probably inherited from Prakrit *𑀑𑀮𑁆𑀮 (*ŏlla), from Sanskrit उल्व (úlva, “cover, envelope; womb, embryonic membrane; vulva”). Cognate with Oriya ହୋଲ (holô, “testicle”) and related to Hindustani होलड़ / هولڑ (holaṛ, “foetus, newborn”).
