Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀔𑁄𑀢𑁆𑀢 (*khotta, donkey) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), of non-Indo-Aryan origin; possibly related to Sanskrit घोट (ghoṭa, horse) (whence ਘੋੜਾ (ghoṛā)).
