Inherited from Prakrit 𑀧𑀮𑁆𑀮𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (pallaṭṭaï), 𑀧𑀮𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (palaṭṭaï), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧-𑀮𑀝𑀢𑀺 (*pa-laṭati). Cognate with Old Marathi 𑘢𑘰𑘩𑘘𑘜𑘹 (pālaṭaṇe), Middle Bengali পালট (paloṭ).
