Inherited from Sanskrit कर्कट (karkaṭa, “crab”), with the word structure and semantic domain suggested borrowing from a substrate language; compare Santali ᱠᱟᱴᱠᱚᱢ (kaṭkôm, “crab”).[1] Cognate with Assamese কেঁকোৰা (kẽküra), Bengali কাঁকড়া (kãkoṛa), Kamta কাঁকৰা (kãkora), Sylheti ꠇꠣꠇꠠꠣ (xaxoṛa), Odia କାଂକଡ଼ା (kaṅkôṛa), କାକାଡ଼ା (kakaṛa), Hindi केकड़ा (kekṛā).
