Inherited from Old Gujarati चौमासउं (caumāsaüṃ), from Sanskrit चतुर्मास (caturmāsa), a compound of चतुर् (catur) + मास (māsa); literally, “four months” as the monsoon season lasts from June through September in India. Doublet of ચતુર્માસ (caturmās). Cognate with Hindi चौमस (caumas) Marathi चौमास (ċaumās), Nepali चौमासा (caumāsā), and Sindhi چَوْماسو / चौमासो (caumāso).
