Etymology

Of obscure origin. C.P. Brown considers the word as borrowed from French étape (“stage, stop”), while Wilson assigns it a native Dravidian origin. Beames and Platts, on the other hand, consider the word to be borrowed from Indo-Aryan *टप्पाल (ṭapāl, “post office, i.e. place where letters are stamped”), from the root underlying टापना (ṭāpnā, “to stamp, pound one's feet”) + आलय (ālay, “place, dwelling”), lit. a "stamping-house".
