From Proto-Tai *toːkᴰ (to pound). Cognate with Lao ຕອກ (tǭk), ᦎᦸᧅᧈ (ṫoak¹), Tai Dam ꪔꪮꪀ, Shan တွၵ်ႇ (tàuk), Ahom 𑜄𑜨𑜀𑜫 (tok). Compare Proto-Austronesian *tuqtuq (to hammer, pound, crush) (whence Paiwan tjuqtjuq).
