Etymology
From สมัย (sà-mǎi, “time; period”) + พระเจ้า (prá-jâao, “an honorific for a king, buddha, buddha statue, etc”, literally “divine lord”) + เหา (hǎo); literally "time of Divine Lord Hao".
Prá-jâao Hǎo ("Divine Lord Hao") is believed to:
- refer to Xiao Hao, a Yunnanese ruler who reigned between 1511–1328 BC, according to Likhit Huntrakun (ลิขิต ฮุนตระกูล) and Chamnong Thongprasoet (จำนงค์ ทองประเสริฐ); or
- refer to Prá-jâao Hǎo, the name of an ancient hall in Lop Buri where Lord Phetracha launched a coup against King Narai in 1688, according to Damrong Rachanuphap (ดำรงราชานุภาพ); or
- be an idiomatic reference to an unspecific ancient figure, with the word Hǎo probably being from the Chinese surname 昊 (hào), according to Suchit Wongthet (สุจิตต์ วงษ์เทศ).
