Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡᩮ᩠ᨶ or ᨡᩮᩢ᩠ᨶ, Lao ເຂັນ (khen), Khün ᨡᩮ᩠ᨶ, ᦃᦲᧃ (ẋiin) or ᦵᦃᧃ (ẋen), Shan ၶဵၼ် (khǎen), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜃𑜫 (khin). The spelling of the word was contaminated by เพ็ญ (pen) which is a loanword from Old Khmer.
