From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g-zik (“leopard”). Cognate with Zhaba ʑe⁵⁵ mei⁵⁵ (“leopard/panther”), Burmese သစ် (sac, “leopard”), Northern Qiang [script needed] (sə), Nuosu ꍀ (ssyt), Chepang [script needed] (jaʔ).
