Etymology

From རྒྱ (rgya, “extent, size; vastness; empire”) + གར (gar) (variant of དཀར (dkar, “white”)), literally “white expanse, white empire”. So named perhaps because its ancient inhabitants wore white clothing. Not related to གར (gar, “dancing”).
