From Proto-Karen *kliʔᴰ (“white”) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *khliʔ² (“idem”) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *k-lip (“turtle; tortoise”). Cognate with S'gaw Karen ချံး (khleë).
