From Proto-Karen *chjaNᴮ (“sour”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-kjuːr ~ *s-kjwaːr (“sour; to be acid”). Cognate with Western Kayah ꤏꤛꤢꤩ꤬ (hsyè).
