Etymology

Inherited from Old Burmese ပိယ်ဟ် (piyh), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-bəj-n/k (“to give”) or Proto-Sino-Tibetan *pîʔ (“to give”). Cognate with Tibetan སྦྱིན (sbyin, “to give, to bestow”) and Chinese 畀 (bì, “to give”).
