Borrowed from Sanskrit संक्रान्ति (saṃkrānti, “passage of the sun from one celestial position to another”). Cognate with Mon သၚ်ကြာန်, Shan သၢင်းၵျၢၼ်ႇ (sáang kjàan), and Thai สงกรานต์ (sǒng-graan, “Songkran”).
