From Proto-Tai *χiːŋᴬ (ginger). Cognate with Lao ຂີງ (khīng), ᦃᦲᧂ (ẋiing), Tai Dam ꪄꪲꪉ, Tai Nüa ᥑᥤᥒᥴ (xíng), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜂𑜫 (khiṅ), Bouyei hingl, Zhuang hing, Zuojiang Zhuang hing. Compare Burmese ချင်း (‌‌hkyang:), Middle Chinese (MC kjang, “ginger”), Proto-Hlai *kʰɯːŋ (ginger).
