Etymology

From Middle Georgian, from Proto-Kartvelian *gom-. Cognate with Svan გუ̂ემ (gûem, room, chamber; cowshed). According to Chukhua (2003), the word is cognate with Svan გუ̂ალ (gûal, cowshed), comparing it to Georgian ქათამი (katami): Svan ქათალ (katal) for the change of the final consonant. However, this correspondence is later denied by Chukhua in his expanded edition of the dictionary in 2019.

Ačaṙean derives from Old Armenian գոմ (gom), which Chukhua derives from Kartvelian instead.
