Etymology

Shanidze supposes, that the word comes from ინდო (indo, India) + -ური (-uri) ფრინველი (prinveli), where only the adjective part remained and then vowel change ოუ -> აუ happened.[1] Compare ბულგარული (bulgaruli, Capsicum annuum) with similar development in speech.
