By surface analysis, ო- (o-) + ფშ- (pş-) + -ა (-a). Inherited from Proto-Georgian-Zan *(s)a-ws₁-e- (“full, complete”). Cognate with Georgian სავსე (savse) and Mingrelian ოფშა (opša).
