სითხე

Georgian

Etymology

From Old Georgian სითხე (sitxe), derived from Proto-Kartvelian *t(e)x- (whence also ნთხევა (ntxeva), დანთხევა (dantxeva)). Equivalent to modern თხ-ელი (tx-eli, thin) + სი- -ე (si- -e, abstract noun-forming circumfix); thus its etymological sense is "thinness". For the semantics involved, compare the origin of Russian жидкость (židkostʹ, liquid).

As often occurs with the circumfix სი- -ე (si- -e), its addition led to the loss of the adjective ending -ელი (-eli). The full form სითხელე (sitxele) also exists, still with the etymological sense of "thinness".
