Etymology
From Old Georgian ჯუარი (ǯuari), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *ǯwar-. Cognate with Mingrelian ჯგუნჯგი (ǯgunǯgi, “spike”) and Laz მზგუჯი (mzguci, “stake, post”). For the semantic shift compare Old Armenian խաչ (xačʻ, “cross ← *stake, *stick”).
