From Old Georgian ჯუარი (ǯuari), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *ǯwar-. Cognate with Mingrelian ჯგუნჯგი (ǯgunǯgi, spike) and Laz მზგუჯი (mzguci, stake, post). For the semantic shift compare Old Armenian խաչ (xačʻ, cross ← *stake, *stick).
