From Proto-Southwestern Tai *daːŋᴬ² (road; way), from Middle Chinese (MC dang, “road inside temple”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨴᩤ᩠ᨦ, Khün ᨴᩤ᩠ᨦ, Lao ທາງ (thāng), ᦑᦱᧂ (taang), Tai Dam ꪕꪱꪉ, Shan တၢင်း (táang), Thai ทาง (taang), Ahom 𑜄𑜂𑜫 (taṅ).
