From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pliənᴮ² (“to change”), from Middle Chinese 變 (MC pjenH, “to change”). Cognate with Thai เปลี่ยน (bplìian), Lao ປ່ຽນ (pīan), Lü ᦵᦔᧃᧈ (ṗen¹), Tai Dam ꪜꪸ꪿ꪙ, Shan ပိၼ်ႇ (pìn), Zhuang bienq, Nong Zhuang byenq or benq.
