From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰaːꟲ¹, from Old Chinese (OC *paːs, “cloth”). Cognate with Thai ผ้า (pâa), Northern Thai ᨹ᩶ᩣ, Lao ຜ້າ (phā), ᦕᦱᧉ (ṗhaa²), Tai Dam ꪠ꫁ꪱ, Shan ၽႃႈ (phāa), Aiton ၸႃ (phā), Khamti ၸႃႛ, Ahom 𑜇𑜠 (pha), 𑜇𑜡 (phā), 𑜇𑜨𑜠 (phoa), or 𑜇𑜨𑜡 (phoā).
