From Proto-Tai *keːꟲ (“to undo; to untie”), from Middle Chinese 解 (MC keaX, “to untie, undo”). Cognate with Thai แก้ (gɛ̂ɛ), Lao ແກ້ (kǣ), Shan ၵႄႈ (kāae), Ahom 𑜀𑜦𑜧 (kē).
