Etymology
Apparently synonymous with Ancient Greek ξιφιστής (xiphistḗs, “baldric”), according to Hesychius of Alexandria. Compare Ancient Greek ἀορτή (aortḗ, “knapsack”).

- Only attested as a hapax in Hesychius:
- 5th century CE, Hesychius Alexandreus, Συναγωγὴ Πασῶν Λέξεων κατὰ Στοιχεῖον Α:
- ἀορτής· ξιφιστής ὑπὸ Μακεδόνων. ἄγγος δερμάτειον ἱματίων

- aortḗs: a baldric, among the Macedonians; a leather case of clothes
