Etymology

Reflecting a root *h₂pel-, possibly also in Latin pōpulus (poplar).[1] Alternatively from a Proto-Albanian *ašpella, whence Albanian shpel (black poplar), with assimilation of /-sp-/ to /-(p)p-/, characteristic of Laconian.[2]
