Etymology
Reflecting a root *h₂pel-, possibly also in Latin pōpulus (“poplar”).[1] Alternatively from a Proto-Albanian *ašpella, whence Albanian shpel (“black poplar”), with assimilation of /-sp-/ to /-(p)p-/, characteristic of Laconian.[2]
