ἀρκάνη

Ancient Greek

Etymology

The connection with ἄρκυς (árkus, hunter's net) is doubtful. The suffix is also seen in δρεπάνη (drepánē, sickle), καπάνη (kapánē, chariot) and θηγάνη (thēgánē, whetstone). Probably a loanword, perhaps from Pre-Greek, according to Beekes.
