Etymology

Compound of 八尺瓊 (yasakani, “long or large jewel”, literally “eight-foot jewel”) +‎ の (no, possessive particle) +‎ 勾玉 (magatama, “curved jewel”, type of ancient curved bead resembling a bear claw). The “eight-foot” may have originally referred to a long cord or necklace on which such magatama beads were strung, as magatama themselves were never so large.[1][2]
