クーラー

Japanese

Etymology

Borrowed from English cooler.[1][2][3]

First cited to 1959.[3]

Pronunciation

Noun

クーラー • (kūrā)

  1. [from 1959] air conditioner emitting cold air
    Synonym: エアコン (eakon)
  2. icebox
    Synonym: アイスボックス (aisubokkusu)

Usage notes

This only refers to devices that only emit cold air, or devices that emit hot or cold air but are taken in their capacity to emit cold air. Therefore the same device is called エアコン (eakon) or クーラー (kūrā) in summer when they are used to cool a room, but are only called エアコン (eakon) and not クーラー (kūrā) when they are used to warm a room in winter.
