メジロムシクイ

Japanese

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [me̞ʑiɾo̞mɯ̟ᵝɕikɯ̟ᵝi]

Noun

メジロムシクイ • (mejiro mushikui)

  1. the Orphean warblers, Sylvia crassirostris (eastern Orphean warbler) and Sylvia hortensis (western Orphean warbler), two species of birds
    • 1994, Yamauchi Hisashi, “Shoku” no rekishi jinruigaku [Historical anthropology of “foodstuff”], page 169:
      フィケドラというのはよくわからないが、(えい)(やく)では beccafico(ベッカフィコ) となっているので、オナガムシクイかメジロムシクイのことかもしれない。
Fikedora to iu no wa yoku wakaranai ga, Eiyaku de wa bekkafiko to natteiru no de, onaga mushikui ka mejiro mushikui no koto kamoshirenai.
I am uncertain about fiquedora, but the English translation is “beccafico”, so it is likely the Dartford warbler or Orphean warbler.

Usage notes

  • As with many terms that name organisms, this term is often spelled in katakana, especially in biological contexts (where katakana is customary).
