Etymology
Compound of 先 (saki, “tip, end”) + 割れ (ware, “splitting, cleaving”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative or stem form”) of intransitive verb 割れる (wareru, “to split, to cleave”)) + スプーン (supūn, “spoon”).[1][2][3]
Apparently coined to refer to the utensil provided as part of school food service.[1] First appearance unknown, but some time after 1860, the first attestation for スプーン (supūn).[4]
