This term is officially proscribed in 1988 by the Jilin provincial authorities (see 关于废止“第二松花江”名称恢复“松花江”名称的通知) as it is associated with Russian and Japanese imperialism in Northeast China. It was declared that the upper stretches of the Songhua River should be referred to as 松花江 (Sōnghuā Jiāng, “Songhua River”) without 第二 (dì'èr, “second”) in front.
