Etymology
Originally derived from 窄る (subaru, “to shrink, to get smaller”, archaic) + しき (shiki, historically attributive form of しい). Compare the adjective 素晴らしい, and the verbs 窄まる (subomaru), 窄める (subomeru). The kanji spelling is an example of ateji (当て字).
