講(こう)演(えん)会(かい) • (kōenkai) 

1. Lecture.

• 講演(こうえん) (kōen)

  講演会 differs from 講演 in that it refers to the congregation of people for the giving and hearing of a lecture, rather than the lecture or address itself. Also, it can be useful to use the longer word when talking, because it avoids confusion with the many homonyms of the shorter word (most notably including 公園(こうえん) (kōen, “park”), which is very common, and 公演(こうえん) (kōen, “public performance”) which is somewhat similar in meaning).

• 講演料(こうえんりょう) (kōenryō): fee for a lecturer
• 連続講演(れんぞくこうえん) (renzoku kōen): lecture series
