Etymology

From Middle Chinese compound 隣國／邻国 (lin kwok, literally “neighbor, next + country”).

After the term was borrowed into Japanese, the 隣／邻 (lín) character in the Chinese spelling was replaced by 鄰／邻 (lín), moving the radical to the other side. Compare modern Mandarin 鄰國／邻国 (línguó).
