From Middle Korean 바회〮 (pàhwóy), from Old Korean 岩乎 (*PAKwo), attested in the eighth century.

In the Hangul script, first attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 바회〮 (Yale: pàhwóy). Compare also Jeju 바위 (bawi) and Gyeongsang Korean 바구 (bagu), 방구 (banggu), and 바우 (bau).
