First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 밠드ᇰ (Yale: pal-s-tung). Equivalent to 발 (bal, “foot”) + ㅅ (-s-) + 등 (deung, “back (of the body)”).
