Clauson suggest that it might ultimately be derived from Ancient Greek Κ (K, “kappa”) through intermediaries. According to Clauson, the circle that Ancient Greek Δ (D, “delta”) had become in Asia was unsuitable for this script which is why the inventor chose to derive it from a variant of Κ (K, “kappa”).

In an older study, he also suggests Ancient Greek Χ (Kh, “chi”) and gives the reason that the inventor ran out of homophonic models.
