Etymology

From Proto-Anatolian *sógn̥, cognate with Luwian 𒋫𒀀𒅔 (ta-a-in, oil), ultimately of uncertain origin, but perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *seg-, whence Sanskrit सजति (sájati, to cling to), Lithuanian sègti (to fasten to). Related to 𒅖𒆠𒄑𒍣 (iš-ki-ez-zi /iškiyezi/, to smear, anoint (with oil)), from Proto-Anatolian *sgyéti
