Other usage

This sign is also the base handshape for "brother" in related words, arising from the Japanese practice of assigning each finger a name based on a family member in a hierarchical manner for children (from thumb to pinky: father, mother, brother, sister, baby). The middle finger is thus お兄さん指 (onii-san yubi), the "brother finger". As with other JSL kinship signs, moved up to denote an elder brother and down to denote a younger brother.
