Uncertain. Originally a Calabrian dialect term. Perhaps related to Ancient Greek ἀνδραγαθία (andragathía, “valour/valor”, “prowess”), or to Latin interanea (“bowels”, in the transferred sense of “sharing a deep, exclusive bond”).
