Borrowed from Spanish Acayucan, from a Nahuan language (cf. Classical Nahuatl Ācayohcān (“place covered in reeds”, name of Acayuca, Hidalgo)), calqued from Popoluca; cf. Highland Popoluca Ca̱pñɨɨm (ca̱pi (“arrow”)), Oluta Popoluca Capeꞌnʉ̱p (cape (“reed”)), Sayula Popoluca Capnʉꞌm (cap (“reed”)). Doublet of Acayuca.
